[edit] Introduction

Infernity is a DARK-Attribute Archetype of Fiend-Type (exceptions here and there like Infernity Beetle) monsters introduced in the Anime, initially piloted by Kalin Kessler. Its name is a portmanteau of "Infernal" and "Infinity", alluding to the "hellish" appearance of the cards combined with the various loops performed with the cards.

Actual cards for the archetype were introduced in the TCG as promotional cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Stardust Accelerator: World Championship 2009. The first Infernity card to be released in booster packs was Infernity Beast in Ancient Prophecy. However, the Archetype did not gain significant support until the release of The Shining Darkness, where fifteen cards were released.

[edit] Gameplay

Infernity monsters have powerful effects which activate when a player has no hands. However, the general consensus among Infernity players is not to whittle their hand down with Discarding cards for costs, but rather to use a heavy line-up of Trap Cards, with a minimal lineup of Monsters, allowing for only a single monster to be drawn with several traps.

A properly created Infernity deck can swarm with several Synchro Monsters, possibly OTKing the opponent. This is through several complex loops that can be performed through the effects of Infernity monsters, allowing for monsters residing in the Graveyard to constantly return and be used in a series of Synchro Summons.

Furthermore, due to the effect of Infernity Archfiend, which both grants the Deck its Swarming ability and allows for Infernity Barriers to be added to the hand, Infernity players will tend to end games with several high-Level Synchro Monsters and multiple copies of Infernity Barrier set, preventing the opponent from turning the game around with Dark Hole.

Additionally, due to their dependency on an empty hand, Infernity decks will be heavily crippled if poor Card Advantage management is used. As such, close attention to card advantage is needed by Infernity players, as Swarming into a Torrential Tribute is extremely crippling.

[edit] Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series

Infernity decks have topped at various YCS tournaments, but their presence has been killed when Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier got banned.
