[edit] Introduction

Blackwings are an Archetype which completely consist of DARK Attribute monsters with the exception of 1 LIGHT Attribute monster: Blackwing - Aurora the Northern Lights. Ever since Blackwings were introduced in Crimson Crisis they rose in popularity as more support came. This was due to their Swarming power and ability to quickly Synchro Summon monsters. Also due to the fact that one of the Signers from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, Crow Hogan used them. Their popularity reached it's maximum when they won the World Championship in 2009 but since then they have started to decline after the Banlists of September 2009, September 2010 and March 2011 limited Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind, Black Whirlwind and Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow respectively and their use was almost gone the uprising of more powerful decks like Dark World, Plant and The Agent. Though still being able to strike fast, they have become inferior to a lot of Decks.

[edit] Game Play

Most Blackwing monsters have an effect that allows them to Special Summon themselves if there is a Blackwing monster on the field. Because of that, Blackwings can easily Swarm, which is helped by the effect of the card Black Whirlwind, who searches Blackwings with less attack points then the one who was Normal Summoned. when Blackwings fail to speed up they can use Spirit Reaper without any problems and due to their grave control and almost every Blackwing being a Dark type monster, Dark Armed Dragon is a welcome card in any Blackwing deck to a powerful beatstick with a powerful effect on the field. 2 of the Blackwings who are used in every Blackwing deck have the ability to Pierce through your opponent's defense position monsters: Blackwing - Bora the Spear and Blackwing Armed Wing making the Archetype able to summon strong synchro monsters and the ability to perice through any defences leaving your opponent wide opponent whether he/she likes it or not.

Even if your opponent manages to get bigger, Blackwing Armor Master will protect you from any battle damage involving him and he will not be killed by battle even leaving a Wedge counter behind which you can remove to make the attack points of the monster 0, making sure you can destroy it by battle that turn.

Blackwings rely on field effects quite a lot so cards like Skill Drain and Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror hurt them big time.

[edit] Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series

Though the Blackwings aren't topping during the recent YCS tournaments, people still use them as a fun deck or they seriously try to top at such an event. Blackwings could be found at the YCS tournaments a couple of years ago as a constant force together with TeleDAD.
